Data science and data analytics have played a large role in business, but each one has different functions as it relates to big data. Data science differs from data analytics by focusing on generating a data product. The purpose of data science is to solve complex problems by combining data with statistical algorithms used for inference or to make predictions. A big part of this involves machine learning. In a nutshell, data science involves decision-making using technology.

Data analytics does not involve generating data products or even coming up with hypotheses, but instead focuses on evaluating existing data sets to understand the information. Data analytics is used to give insight.
